Apart from one kiss, Su Shanshan showed no other unusual behavior.
However, she grew more affectionate with Pei Xingyan. By the time night came and it was time to leave, she was completely pressed against his shoulder, as if at any moment, if she wasn’t careful, the person beside her would disappear.
Pei Xingyan couldn’t push her away nor dodge her; he could only temporarily go along with her.
But with Ye Ziwei possibly lurking outside somewhere, he didn’t dare take any chances. So, he discussed with Su Shanshan to wait until after dark before leaving.
She was surprisingly happy with Pei Xingyan’s request to stay a little longer and even suggested that they might as well stay the night.
But Pei Xingyan refused. His instincts told him it wasn’t safe to stay.
When Su Shanshan kissed him earlier, there was clearly some anger in it—not directed at him, but at herself.
Who was she blaming? Pei Xingyan couldn’t say for sure, but he knew she must want to find a way to make amends to quell her own fury.
Just now, she had even dragged him to the washbasin under the pretense of giving him a facial and trying out her cosmetics. She washed his face hard, focusing especially on the kiss mark he had left earlier, scrubbing it until it almost rubbed off a large patch of skin.
Under these circumstances, staying was out of the question.
The two of them nestled on the sofa, Su Shanshan leaning on the boy beside her, quietly watching the sunset sink below the horizon. Darkness slowly enveloped the room, with only the gleam in their eyes shimmering faintly.
Su Shanshan moved closer and closer; every breath she exhaled brushed against Pei Xingyan’s face.
Her lips murmured incomprehensible whispers, but Pei Xingyan didn’t try to pry. If someone truly wanted you to understand what they were saying, they would find a way to make themselves understood.
So he played the role of an excellent listener, saying nothing, simply quietly listening.
Su Shanshan’s voice was smooth and clear—a true delight to the ear. He simply pretended he was listening to someone reciting poetry.
After a long while, the sky was completely dark.
It was time to go.
Su Shanshan jumped up, running toward the door with quick footsteps, bending down to fidget with both of their shoes just as she had when she arrived.
“I can do it myself,” Pei Xingyan said, still feeling a little awkward.
“No~” she pouted stubbornly, “Why won’t you let me help you put on your shoes? You’re not disgusted by me, are you?”
Pei Xingyan was speechless but reluctantly accepted her offer.
Her hands were soft, with no bones felt beneath the skin. She was used to holding paintbrushes, so they were very dexterous. Without much effort, she helped him put on his shoes in one go.
“Thanks,” he said promptly.
“Ay, why say things like that?” Su Shanshan feigned anger, then suddenly stood up, slipping her foot out of her slippers and holding it up in front of Pei Xingyan’s eyes.
She smiled slyly, her eyebrows dancing with mischief.
“What are you doing?” Pei Xingyan asked, confused.
“What do you mean, what am I doing?” Su Shanshan replied with a puzzled look. “Of course, putting on shoes~”
“Me?”
“Yeah!” Su Shanshan said matter-of-factly. “Baby, help me out~”
Pei Xingyan knew there was no such thing as a free lunch, so he bent down and picked up her shoes.
As if they had planned it, she happened not to wear those convenient uniform shoes today but a pair of lightweight sneakers. They looked nice, shaped her feet beautifully, but were tricky to put on.
Her feet were clad in white ankle socks, wiggling teasingly in front of his face.
Pei Xingyan grasped her small foot with one hand and held the shoe with the other, slowly sliding her foot inside.
But she was too restless, as if deliberately teasing him, giggling and saying it tickled while kicking her legs wildly.
Her little flurry scattered scents in the air, but none of them unpleasant. From this close, Pei Xingyan smelled only a faint, elegant fragrance—whether from her feet or her shoes.
He suppressed a wave of unspeakable desires and playfully tussled with Su Shanshan.
Su Shanshan immediately surrendered, not resisting even an extra second. She twisted her body, trying to pull her foot free, but it was futile; Pei Xingyan firmly held it in place and slid the shoe on.
On the other foot, she was much more obedient, not daring to move, bowing her head and meekly complying with Pei Xingyan’s movements. Even when his hand accidentally brushed her foot’s sole, she dared not laugh.
Once the shoes were finally on, she returned to her usual playful self, flapping her little feet on the hallway floor and then spinning around as if to show off.
“Yay, baby put my shoes on for me. Now I won’t take them off when I sleep~”
“That might get stinky…”
“Even if they do, you’ll like it, right?”
“That’s a bit much to ask…”
“Hehe, it won’t stink~”
…
The two of them walked stuck together like conjoined twins, swaying slowly down the road. When they came, Pei Xingyan only took five minutes, but now they had been walking for a full half hour.
He indulged her antics not because he was a soft-hearted guy but because he feared running into Ye Ziwei again at the door. He had a bad feeling.
But that familiar figure still appeared in his sight.
Ye Ziwei was still struggling to train on the small path to the east. She had countless times coquettishly told Pei Xingyan, “I want to get better so you can take me out to play.” For that goal, she was truly working hard.
Pei Xingyan was a little touched, but now, more than anything, he felt fear.
His expression tensed, and he grabbed Su Shanshan’s shoulder, quickening his pace.
But this troublemaker girl let out a fake, frightened cry at just the wrong moment.
“Ay, baby, why are you in such a hurry? There are still people here~”
Her voice naturally attracted Ye Ziwei nearby. Fortunately, it was quite dark now, and the street lamps were dim. She didn’t immediately recognize Pei Xingyan.
Still, a strange intuition compelled her to walk toward them.
Pei Xingyan watched out of the corner of his eye, his heart pounding wildly. He was extremely nervous, adrenaline taking over and making decisions for him.
He once again lifted Su Shanshan up and ran toward the door.
Su Shanshan shouted happily and excitedly “Baby,” just as she had when they arrived.
Their figures quickly vanished into the darkness, leaving only Su Shanshan’s voice echoing through the garden, calling “Baby” repeatedly.
Limping Ye Ziwei arrived late, unable to satisfy her curiosity to see which couple was so affectionate.
But she couldn’t help feeling happy for them because now she thought of her own romance.
She couldn’t help but wonder: if her Xingyan brother craved her this much, holding her fiercely in public without caring about anything, doing this and that to her, how happy and fortunate would she be?
But on the flip side, she thought it wouldn’t be bad either if she held Xingyan brother like that. Surely, it would be just as wonderful.
She decided to add this to her list and try it next time she called him “Baby.”
It would definitely be very nice.
