Chapter 33 (2/2): I’ll Wait for You to Come Home

Meng Chu had been picked up daily by Liu lately; they were already quite familiar.

But hearing those titles still caught her off guard.

She sat quietly in the car, pursing her lips.

“Seatbelt,” Cheng Jinyu leaned over, looping the belt around her and clicking it into place.

Liu, sitting in the front, saw this through the rearview mirror.

He smiled and asked, “Director Cheng, are you on a business trip this time? Is your wife coming along?”

Liu rarely spoke while driving Cheng Jinyu before.

But today, he couldn’t help but ask.

“No, just me. She’s just seeing me off,” Cheng Jinyu replied flatly.

Liu started the car and smiled, “You two are so affectionate—truly a newlywed couple.”

Meng Chu, silent beside him, pursed her lips slightly.

Well, no one was wrong there.

Knowing Cheng Jinyu disliked chatter, Liu said a few more words then focused on driving.

Traffic in Shanghai was still somewhat congested at night.

But after passing through that stretch, the car sped along the highway.

After some time, the black darkness ahead suddenly gave way to a huge, glittering building, and the thunderous roar overhead reminded Meng Chu that they had arrived at the airport.

So soon?

She clearly remembered Pudong Airport was quite far out in the suburbs.

Every time she took a flight there, it felt like a long journey.

Sometimes colleagues from Suzhou joked that driving to Pudong Airport took as long as going back home.

Liu parked the car in the airport garage, and Meng Chu accompanied Cheng Jinyu out.

They headed to the boarding gate to check in, and luckily, there were few people.

After finishing, Meng Chu looked at the air ticket in his hand.

“Let’s go to the lounge,” she smiled softly.

But Cheng Jinyu said nothing.

After a moment of silence, he reached into his pants pocket and took something out.

When she looked at his palm, he gently opened it toward her.

It was a card like an Access Card.

Meng Chu was stunned.

Cheng Jinyu’s voice was calm as he said, “I’ll be away for several days this trip. If you want to see Momom, you can use this.”

Now she understood what the card was.

It was the Access Card to his home.

For a moment, she stood frozen in place.

It was as if someone pressed pause, and even her thoughts stopped.

Of course, she knew what this card meant.

No one would casually hand over access to their home, especially someone like Cheng Jinyu, who valued privacy more than anyone.

Otherwise, the media wouldn’t constantly complain about how hard it was to interview him.

But now, he was giving her the card.

When they got married, they said it was just to appease each other’s families.

“Okay,” Meng Chu finally spoke after a long silence.

She reached out and took the Access Card from his palm.

Cheng Jinyu’s lips curled slightly.

The card, which should have felt cold to the touch, seemed to warm in her palm.

It was as if her hand was on fire.

“Then I’ll go in first,” Cheng Jinyu said softly.

Meng Chu nodded.

He turned and headed toward the security checkpoint—the VIP Security Checkpoint, where no lines were necessary.

Meng Chu watched him hand over his ID to the staff.

After a moment, he should be going inside.

She took a deep breath, preparing to leave.

Suddenly, just as he was about to enter, he turned back.

Meng Chu watched him turn around from a distance and instinctively raised her hand to wave.

The man, who had one hand in his pocket, slowly drew it out.

Finally, Meng Chu saw him raise his hand and gently wave back.

The motion was small, but it was a response.

Thinking about how this was definitely not the usual Cheng Jinyu, Meng Chu smiled.

When Cheng Jinyu’s figure disappeared from the gate, Meng Chu sighed deeply.

She turned to leave.

Though Cheng Jinyu had gone on many business trips before, she’d never felt emotions like this.

After he turned and disappeared, her heart was inexplicably stirred.

She didn’t know when she’d come to rely on Cheng Jinyu like this.

So much so that standing here, her heart was hit by waves of emotion she could no longer ignore.

Meng Chu stood there for an unknown length of time until her phone vibrated.

It pulled her back.

She glanced at her phone, seeing Wang Can’s name, and answered.

On the other end, Wang Can immediately said, “General Manager Meng, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before reporting Qian Wei.”

“It’s okay. I said I’d leave things to you to handle,” Meng Chu said calmly.

Wang Can lowered her voice, “I know Qian Wei has been suspended. His actions have even affected the company’s project.”

Meng Chu was silent for a moment.

Just as she was about to respond, Wang Can continued, “But don’t worry. I absolutely won’t tell anyone that the video evidence came from you. I would never betray you.”

Meng Chu smiled softly, “Thank you.”

“I should be the one thanking you,” Wang Can said. “After reporting Qian Wei, I found the things I wrote were posted online. I saw so many people supporting me, praising me for doing well.”

“So you were right—this world’s rules shouldn’t be like that. As long as we speak up, we can always change something.”

Meng Chu felt the courage beneath Wang Can’s trembling voice.

She said gently, “It’s good you think that way. I believe after this, you won’t be afraid anymore.”

“Of course,” Wang Can seemed to recall something else.

She said, “By the way, a former female colleague who resigned recently called me. She wanted to join us in reporting Qian Wei. Someone encouraged her to stand up, so people like Qian Wei won’t harm more.”

“General Manager Meng, thank you for everything you’ve done,” Wang Can said sincerely.

Meng Chu was surprised, “I didn’t know about this.”

Wang Can exclaimed, “If not you, then who else?”

After talking with Wang Can, Meng Chu hung up and looked down at her phone.

But she decided to make a call.

When Cheng Jinyu’s voice sounded from the other end, it was tinged with surprise.

“Meng Chu?”

He must have found it strange she was calling just a few minutes after hanging up.

“Meng Chu, are you alright?”

But when he heard no response, his tone became anxious and he hurriedly asked again.

Meng Chu finally said, “I’m fine.”

Hearing her normal voice, Cheng Jinyu relaxed and asked, “What’s wrong?”

Meng Chu said, “Wang Can called just now—the assistant who was harassed by Qian Wei.”

“Mm,” Cheng Jinyu responded, showing he was listening.

Meng Chu quietly said, “She said thank you, and also thanked the anonymous person who persuaded the resigned colleague to stand up.”

Anonymous Person.

She referred to him like that.

Softly, she said, “I’m really glad—I’m not alone.”

“You never have been,” Cheng Jinyu’s clear voice sounded.

Her heart finally settled.

It really was him.

She hadn’t guessed wrong.

Meng Chu’s mood was like a rollercoaster—between the sudden sadness when he left and the reassurance knowing he had helped.

“Cheng Jinyu, I forgot to say, have a smooth business trip.”

A faint smile came through the line.

At this moment, Meng Chu finally spoke the words she hadn’t said earlier.

“I’ll wait for you to come home.”

When these words reached Cheng Jinyu’s ears, he suddenly clenched the phone in his palm tightly.

The deafening roar of planes outside seemed to drown out the rapid beating of his heart.

“Okay.”

Cheng Jinyu’s deep voice replied.

Then the call ended.

He sat there, still lost in his emotions.

Until a small child stumbled over and bumped into his leg.

“Sorry, sorry,” the child’s mother rushed over, apologizing repeatedly.

Cheng Jinyu shook his head lightly, “It’s okay.”

Then he lowered his gaze to the little girl before him, dressed in a cute pink dress with a bib around her neck and sparkling lips.

“She’s very cute,” Cheng Jinyu said, unusually verbose.

The mother quickly lifted the child up and smiled, “Thank you.”

After the child was taken away, Cheng Jinyu rested his elbow on the armrest of the wide chair.

But his gaze remained fixed on the small child walking back and forth nearby.

If he and Meng Chu had children, would they be this adorable?
