Rushing out the door, Tang Wanyue was worried about Tang Cheng on the other side, but when she pushed open the door, she found the bookstore café blocked by tables and chairs.
“Classmate, classmate, the zombies are here!”
She anxiously pounded on the glass, calling out, but there was no response. Through the gap in the glass, she saw Tang Cheng lying on the floor with a face ashen as death, completely lifeless.
“Could it be that he too…”
Tears welled up uncontrollably in her eyes. Tang Wanyue suddenly realized this classmate was already dead, as he hadn’t appeared at all in these past few days.
The tears fell like broken strings onto her skirt. Desperate and frightened, Tang Wanyue ran toward the corridor ahead.
A few zombies wandered sporadically along the corridor. Not far ahead, a zombie with bulging eyes suddenly turned around, baring its teeth and charging quickly toward her!
Tang Wanyue trembled all over, retreating with fearful steps, but running backward would only get her surrounded by zombies — a dead end!
At that moment, a baseball bat lay on the floor near her feet, dropped earlier by the middle-aged man who had fled.
“I… I want to live!”
Her trembling hand picked up the bat. Tang Wanyue fixed her gaze on the advancing man-eater.
“He saved me so many times… I absolutely can’t die here so easily!”
“I’m an Executive Committee member of the Student Council!”
Summoning her courage, as an Executive Committee member, she was used to refusing to give up. At the instant the zombie lunged, Tang Wanyue stood on the tips of her black silk-clad toes and swung hard at the zombie’s head!
The bat struck the skull with a thud!
Immediately, the zombie let out a guttural “Ugh!” and fell backward to the ground, blood pooling on the floor. Though the force wasn’t overwhelming, it was enough to wound the creature fatally, leaving it twitching and struggling but unable to get up.
“I-I’m sorry… you scared me…”
Having defeated a zombie, Tang Wanyue still weakly apologized to it. Her bravery was far greater than that of many men.
Still fearful, she continued running forward. Fortunately, the zombies were scattered. Tang Wanyue reached the central hall unscathed.
“Classmate said, if in danger, run west…”
Remembering Tang Cheng’s words, Tang Wanyue’s eyes grew warm with tears again. She wiped her tears from her face and bravely ran toward the western corridor of the floor.
Some zombies followed behind, but they moved slowly. As long as she wasn’t surrounded, running straight ahead was the best option.
In her panic, Tang Wanyue’s bag fell in the western corridor, which would later help Tang Cheng locate her quickly.
Finally, she hid in the innermost Chinese restaurant kitchen on the west side, locked the door, and spent four terrifying days alone inside.
Because several zombies blocked the door outside, Tang Wanyue couldn’t leave. Fortunately, the kitchen had water and food, allowing her to miraculously survive.
Time returned to the present.
“So that’s how it was…” Hearing Tang Wanyue recount those past days, Tang Cheng finally understood what had happened while he was unconscious from the infection.
“When I went to find you that day… I thought you were already dead.” Tang Wanyue cried in terror inside the room, recalling the scene from that day, “But I kept praying that you were alive, hoping you would come find me. But four whole days passed…”
“Don’t worry, I’m still alive.” Tang Cheng, now fully aware of the situation, spoke toward Tang Wanyue inside the room. “Now, you should open the door, right?”
“No!”
“…”
