Chaos spread throughout the entire Police Station in a short amount of time. Wang Xu, who was still in his own office, first noticed the commotion outside and wondered what was going on.
He got up and walked to the door, noticing wisps of Black Mist seeping through the crack and into the office. A sense of impending doom hit him, and he quickly grabbed his service pistol and loaded it with Bullets.
Bang!
Wang Xu kicked the door open with one foot. Just as he was about to raise his gun in alert, the scene before his eyes made him freeze.
“What the hell is this thing?”
Black Mist—nothing but Black Mist. The moment he stepped into the corridor, he was surrounded, unable to tell east from west. Even though this was a familiar workplace, under the shroud of Black Mist, it had become a labyrinth.
Wang Xu’s face darkened, his expression extremely grim. After thinking it over, he decided to retreat back into his office and use his phone to contact his subordinates still inside the Police Station.
“Chief… we… were attacked…”
The voice on the other end was choppy, mixed with noisy interference.
“I saw it. Is everyone alright?”
“We’re fine… just can’t get out. None of the guys who dared leave… came back…”
“Hello, what did you say? Hello? Hello!”
The call suddenly disconnected. Listening to the beeping tone in his ear, Wang Xu cursed and put the phone away.
His face was so tense it could drip water, the veins on his hand gripping the gun standing out.
While the other officers were too afraid to act rashly, there was one person who, upon seeing the Black Mist, almost didn’t hesitate at all and charged straight into the Police Station, showing no fear whatsoever.
It was none other than Lu Yunze.
As he ran inside, he checked his body to make sure the Black Mist hadn’t caused any strange changes.
“Is this a Secret Art meant to interfere with people?”
After entering, he quickly lost his sense of direction. Even though he still remembered the way to the Reception Room, he couldn’t be sure he could find that girl again.
Compared to the Crow’s Mouth that made danger come true at a word, Lu Yunze was now most worried about Jiang Sui’s safety. He kept repeating prayers for her well-being in his heart.
He had just promised her he would protect her, and if anything really happened to her, Lu Yunze feared he would hate himself for the rest of his life.
The more anxious he became, the harder it was to find the Reception Room. Lu Yunze had already wandered around in the Black Mist for some time, out of breath, unable to find the door marked Reception Room.
“Where the hell is it?”
Lu Yunze was so anxious he was about to start cursing.
“Hmm?”
He suddenly stopped in his tracks, noticing a change in the Black Mist around him. It had been floating quietly before, but now it suddenly began to churn, as if receiving an order, actively pulling back to form a small clearing.
Lu Yunze saw the counter that only appeared in the Police Station’s main hall. To his surprise, after all his wandering, he was still in the main hall.
At the far end of the clearing, a figure slowly appeared.
It wasn’t Jiang Sui, but it was someone Lu Yunze was looking for.
The Butler from the manor. At this moment, he was holding an automatic rifle, his favorite black suit stained with dust, his gaze slightly vacant.
“Old man, was this your doing?”
“Yes.”
“The last maid’s disappearance, and the attack on Jiang Sui—was that you too?”
“It was me.”
“Why did you do this?”
“Because… they promised me benefits. No, that’s not right.” The Butler’s expression twisted, like a stiff puppet. “Because it was the Master’s order.”
Master? Order?
“Who would’ve thought, you old thing, you really know how to play.”
Even Lu Yunze couldn’t laugh at his own cold joke.
As soon as he finished speaking, the Butler raised his gun and pulled the trigger repeatedly.
Lu Yunze sprang into action, ducking behind the Sofa.
Gunfire roared, Bullets striking the leather Sofa, sending cotton stuffing flying in all directions.
“Young Master Lu, I told you—you’re not worthy of the Miss. And it’s not just because you’re an outsider.”
A smirk appeared on the Butler’s lips.
“Every Luo Family member is a genius among Secret Arts Practitioners. Only you, you’ve never shown any talent at all.”
Every servant who worked at the Luo Family Manor had seen Luo Yao display her Secret Art. Everyone admired her graceful bearing. But as for Lu Yunze, not just the servants—even the Butler had never seen him use a Secret Art.
“You actually can’t use Secret Arts at all, can you?”
He’d heard these words countless times, but they still stung.
Lu Yunze could only force a bitter smile.
“If you’re so curious, then tonight I’ll let you see for yourself.”
The gunfire stopped—out of Bullets. Lu Yunze quickly shifted his position, changing from back-to-the-Sofa to facing it head-on.
He pressed both palms against the Sofa, holding his breath and focusing all his attention.
Meanwhile, the Butler deftly swapped out the magazine for a new one—all taken from the Police Station’s armory, finally realizing his dream of unlimited ammo.
“Young Master Lu, if I say you’re useless, then you are. Normally you hide behind the Miss, now you’re hiding behind the Sofa. You might as well come out and end it.”
Just as the Butler took a step forward, he sensed something was wrong.
In the next instant, the Sofa suddenly exploded with a thunderous boom. The stationary Sofa kicked up a cloud of dust, flying forward at tremendous speed like an enraged rhinoceros, causing the Butler to empty his magazine in fright.
But how could Bullets stop such a massive object? The Sofa smashed into the Butler, sending him flying and crashing hard into a corner of the hall, cracking the wall.
“Underestimating people is never a good thing.”
As the dust settled, Lu Yunze stood up and patted his clothes. The fabric on his forearms was shredded, revealing his slightly muscular arms.
This was the Secret Art Lu Yunze had mastered on his own since childhood—he could set an “Anchor Point,” concentrate his strength there, and unleash it all at once. The effect was plain and simple, lacking the flashiness of other Secret Arts, but the destructive power was by no means inferior.
The reason he never used it in front of others was simple—it was hard to control.
When he was young, he almost hurt Luo Yao by misjudging his strength, so he decided to use it as little as possible. He thought he’d live out his life as an ordinary person, never expecting he’d have to pick this up again.
Lu Yunze tried to make a fist; his hand trembled from numbness.
“After all this time, I don’t seem to have gotten any worse.”
The first time he used it, he knocked down a tree—and dislocated his own arm in the process. Back then, he basically couldn’t use it twice in a row.
As his body grew stronger, Lu Yunze could store more power and use the Secret Art more frequently. But lacking enough practice, his control was still lacking.
Making the Sofa his Anchor Point, storing up power, then launching it like a Bullet—this hit would leave the Butler with at least a few broken bones, if not dead.
Lu Yunze walked toward him, suddenly remembering the Black Mist around him hadn’t dissipated, which meant the Butler wasn’t dead yet—he even had enough strength to maintain the Secret Art!
At that moment, the Butler, pinned under the Sofa, suddenly raised his gun and fired at Lu Yunze again.
Lu Yunze immediately set his Anchor Point on both feet, using the burst of strength to leap to a distant pillar.
“Tch.”
He dodged in time, but a Bullet still grazed his shoulder, taking a chunk of flesh and causing blood to pour out.
The Butler had already crawled out from under the Sofa, his face twisted with rage, blood soaking into his eyes, making him look like a demon from hell.
He was furious, unable to believe he’d been wounded so badly by the person he always looked down on.
The Black Mist gathered again, leaving not a single gap for Lu Yunze, completely cutting off his perception of his surroundings. He could only rely on the pillar at his back.
“Doesn’t look good for him.”
On the second floor of the hall, the Black Cat lounged lazily, letting out a yawn.
“Even though he gained a bit of an edge thanks to the information gap, he failed to finish off his opponent immediately and now he’s put himself at a disadvantage.”
Did I misjudge him?
The Black Cat’s Golden Eyes pierced through the Black Mist, landing on Lu Yunze.
The Luo Family wouldn’t keep a Lu in their midst for no reason. If he isn’t the one I’m looking for, where else am I supposed to find a better candidate?
“Senior, just watch.”
Jiang Sui suddenly appeared beside him, resting her chin in her hand as she leaned against the railing.
“Will he win?”
“He will.”
In the girl’s pale violet eyes, a fiery light shone—she was even more eager than the Black Cat to see the outcome of this battle.
